503.09R1 - STUDENT USE OF PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES REGULATION
The WACO Community School District is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment. To support this commitment, the district restricts student access to and use of personal electronic devices during the school day.
Students are expected to keep personal electronic devices turned off and not on their person during the school day. Devices should be left at home, secured in a vehicle, stored in a student locker, or placed in another location designated by school staff. Personal electronic devices may not be visible, audible, or used during the school day.
A personal electronic device that is seen, heard, or used during the school day will be considered a violation of Board Policy 503.09 and this regulation.
All district staff members are authorized to enforce this regulation. Students are expected to comply promptly with staff directives. Refusal to comply may result in additional disciplinary consequences.
Violations will be addressed through progressive disciplinary measures. Consequences may include confiscation of the device, notification of a parent or guardian, a requirement that the device be retrieved by a parent or guardian, and additional disciplinary action consistent with the applicable student handbook and district procedures.
Personal electronic devices specifically authorized through a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or Individual Health Plan (IHP) are exempt from these restrictions when used in accordance with the applicable plan. Exceptions may also be granted by a building administrator for documented educational, health, or safety purposes.
The district is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of personal electronic devices brought onto school property or to school-sponsored activities.
Building administrators may establish procedures necessary to implement and enforce this regulation consistently. The administration will work collaboratively with students and families to communicate expectations and maintain a learning environment focused on student engagement and academic success.
